The Last Love Song on This Little Planet
Why is the alternative title "The Last Love Song on This Little Planet"? Where does the love song come in?
The first explicit reference made to the love song is in episode 12 (obviously titled Love Song) where out of the blue, a love song is played over and over by the radio stations. The people remember it as a favourite from long ago and are glad for its reappearance, which lightens the gloom somewhat.
Chise realises that it is the very song that Shuji hums whenever he's happy. I only noticed this when I rewatched the first few episodes. As the story progresses, things get more depressing, and Shuji naturally stops humming.
The love song played on the airwaves isn't the only love song in the story. If you've watched the last episode, you would know that the planet is wrecked by an earthquake and Shuji is the final survivor, together with Chise's 'soul'. The sounds of their voices are the last thing that can be heard - hence, the last love song on this little planet.
